How to set up Discord onboarding questions

Onboarding asks new members a few questions when they join and gives them roles and channels based on their answers, so a gamer, an artist and a lurker each land in the right place. Here is how to set it up.

What you need first

  • A Community server: Server Settings → Enable Community.
  • At least 7 default channels (the ones everyone gets), with at least 5 of them that members can send messages in.

How questions work

Each question has a few answers. Each answer gives roles, channels or both. Questions can be required or optional, and single or multiple choice. You can also show a question only on the Channels & Roles page instead of when people join.

What you can't do

  • Branch: every question is shown to everyone. There is no "only ask this if they picked X".
  • Give a private channel as an answer. To open a private area, give the role that can see it instead.
  • Ask lots of questions: Discord limits how many you can have, and every extra question loses people.

Questions people actually answer

  • Ask about what they're here for (games, topics, interests) and give matching channels and roles.
  • Keep it to two or three questions with short, clear answers.
  • Use an optional question for notification roles, like announcements or events.
  • Never hand out staff or admin roles from an answer.

How Foreman handles it

In the Builder: Members → Onboarding. Foreman checks the requirements, warns about private channels used as answers, and sets up the questions in Discord when you push.

Let Foreman set it up
