How to set up a Discord welcome message

A Discord welcome message is the first thing a new member sees. Done well, it tells them where to go, what to read and how to get their roles, so they stay instead of drifting off.

Discord's built-in options

  • System messages: Server Settings → Overview → System Messages Channel posts a short random greeting when someone joins.
  • Community servers can add a welcome screen with a short description and up to 5 recommended channels.

A custom Discord welcome message with a bot

A welcome bot lets you write your own message, mention the new member, point at your rules and roles channels, and optionally send it by DM. Most offer placeholders, like the member's name and the member count.

What a good welcome message says

  • Their name, so it feels personal.
  • Where to start: the rules and the roles channel.
  • One thing to do next, like introducing themselves.
  • Short enough to read in five seconds.

Channel or DM?

A welcome in a channel makes the server feel alive. A DM is private but easy to miss, and some people turn off DMs from servers, so treat it as an extra rather than the only welcome.

Set up a Discord welcome message with Foreman

/welcome set posts your message in a channel when someone joins, /welcome dm also sends it by DM, /welcome test shows you how it looks, and /welcome off stops it. Placeholders: {user} mentions them, plus {username}, {server} and {count} (the member count). In the Builder it's Members → Joining, alongside a role every new member gets.

Let Foreman set it up
