How to set up a Discord server, step by step

Here is how to set up a Discord server step by step, in the order that avoids the usual mistakes: plan the layout, get roles and permissions right, then add the welcome, safety and onboarding pieces that keep it running.

Step 1: create the server

In Discord, press the + at the bottom of your server list, choose Create My Own, and pick whether it's for a club or community or just you and your friends. Give it a name and an icon; you can change both later.

Step 2: plan categories and channels

Group channels into a few categories, like START HERE (welcome, rules, announcements), CHAT, one for your main topic, and VOICE. Start small: a handful of active channels beats twenty quiet ones, and you can add more when people ask for them.

Step 3: set up roles in the right order

Create a few roles: admins, moderators, members, and any opt-in roles people pick themselves. Then drag them into order in Server Settings → Roles: admins on top, then moderators, then your bots, then member roles. A role, or a bot, can only manage roles below it.

Step 4: decide who can see what

Set access on categories rather than every channel. Make a staff category private (deny @everyone View Channel, allow your staff roles) and make announcements and rules read-only (deny @everyone Send Messages).

Step 5: welcome people and let them pick roles

Point new members at your rules and roles with a welcome message, and let them choose opt-in roles (games, interests, notifications) with reaction roles or role buttons.

Step 6: turn on safety settings

  • Server Settings → Safety Setup: set a verification level so brand-new accounts wait before they can post.
  • Server Settings → AutoMod: block spam, mention spam and links to other servers.
  • Add a moderation bot for warnings, timeouts and logs.

Step 7: onboarding questions (Community servers)

If you enable Community, onboarding questions can hand new members the right roles and channels as they join.

Set up a Discord server faster with Foreman

Foreman does steps 2 to 7 with you. Describe the server or pick a template at arsforeman.com, review the plan, and he builds the channels, roles, permissions, welcome message, role pickers, AutoMod and onboarding in your server. He shows you the plan first, never asks for Administrator and never deletes anything.
